Hydroponic Cultivation of Vine Leaves with Reduced Carbon Footprint in a Mediterranean Greenhouse

نویسندگان

چکیده

Vine leaves are considered a delicacy food however they only produced as byproduct for short harvest period due to grape cultivation practices and numerous chemical applications. In this work, vine plants were cultivated hydroponically in greenhouse, extend the along with high plant density, maximize fresh yield. Four different substrates tested—Perlite, Perlite-Attapulgite, Perlite-Zeolite, 1.7Perlite-higher density planting—with soil treatment control, experimental lasted total of about seven months year 2021. Quantitative qualitative characteristics such number weight, color leaves, nitrates, photosynthetic parameters, phenols, nutrient concentrations assessed, while product’s environmental impact was calculated. The 1.7Perlite 1.6–2.0 times higher per hectare than other hydroponic treatments 8.7 treatment, no statistically significant differences found regarding characteristics. Consequently, 1.7P resulted 1.4 7.6 lower product carbon footprint compared treatments. future research, water retention will be further studied year-round production heated greenhouse full climate control so that kept evergreen.

Carbon footprint of water reuse and desalination: a review of greenhouse gas emissions and estimation tools

As population and water demand increase, there is a growing need for alternative water supplies from water reuse and desalination systems. These systems are beneficial to water augmentation; however, there are concerns related to their carbon footprint. This study compiles the reported carbon footprint of these systems from existing literature, recognizes general trends of carbon footprint of w...

A Greenhouse Gas and Soil Carbon Model for Estimating the Carbon Footprint of Livestock Production in Canada

To assess tradeoffs between environmental sustainability and changes in food production on agricultural land in Canada the Unified Livestock Industry and Crop Emissions Estimation System (ULICEES) was developed. It incorporates four livestock specific GHG assessments in a single model. To demonstrate the application of ULICEES, 10% of beef cattle protein production was assumed to be displaced w...

A Step toward a Sustainable Diet by Reducing Carbon Footprint: A Case Study in Iran

Introduction: Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have caused environmental effects. Food production is one of the sources of GHGs. This study aimed to suggest dietary scenarios for decreasing GHG emissions. Materials and Methods: GHG emissions in the target population of Urmia city, Northwest Iran, were investigated using a modeling approach. Three dietary scenarios were modeled and analyzed to ev...

Estimation of the Carbon Footprint in Dairy Sheep Farm

By 2050, the earth’s population is expected to be more than 9 billion. The need for secure food and water supply will force agriculture to increase production. The major greenhouse gases (GHGs) from the livestock sector are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) throughout the production process. These gases are the key contributor to an in...

Leaf Mimicry: Chameleon-like Leaves in a Patagonian Vine

Mimicry has evolved in plants for a number of traits, both floral and vegetative. The discovery of a vine that mimics the leaf shape of different hosts poses new questions about the function of leaf mimicry, interplant signalling and leaf development.
